Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
