The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
