RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
